How it works

How Race RGB works

Three simple steps to transform your smart lights into a real-time F1 experience.

Race RGB connects your smart lights to live Formula 1 race data. It's that simple. No complicated setup, no confusing settings - just connect, calibrate, and watch your room sync with the track.

1

Connect your lights

First, you'll connect your LIFX, Philips Hue, or Govee lights to Race RGB. This is a one-time setup that takes about 2-3 minutes.

LIFX setup

Click "Connect LIFX" in your dashboard. You'll authorize Race RGB to control your lights through LIFX's API. Your lights will appear instantly.

Philips Hue setup

For Philips Hue, you'll need a Hue Bridge (it's the white box that connects to your router). Press the bridge button when prompted, and Race RGB will discover all your lights.

Govee setup

Get a free API key from the Govee Developer Portal, then enter it in Settings. Your Govee lights will appear instantly and you can start controlling them.

2

Calibrate your delay

Every broadcast has a delay - satellite feeds, streaming services, even cable. Race RGB lets you sync your lights to match what you're seeing on screen.

How calibration works

  1. During a practice session or qualifying, open the delay calibrator in your dashboard.
  2. When you see a flag appear on your TV or stream, press the button.
  3. Race RGB calculates the exact delay and syncs your lights automatically.

Pro tip: Calibrate once per race weekend. Different broadcast sources have different delays, so if you switch from ESPN to F1 TV, recalibrate.

3

Connect to a session

When a race weekend starts, you'll see available sessions in your dashboard: Practice 1, Practice 2, Practice 3, Qualifying, and the Race. Click "Connect to Session" and your lights will start syncing in real-time.

Real-time flag detection

Race RGB pulls live flag data and translates it into light commands for your devices. Red flags flash red, yellows pulse yellow, greens pulse green - all in real-time.

Background sync (desktop app)

With the Race RGB desktop app (Windows and macOS), your lights keep syncing even when you close the browser. Install it once, connect to a session, and forget about it. Your room stays synced throughout the entire race weekend.

Once connected, you can minimize the dashboard and just watch the race. Your lights will handle the rest. When the session ends, Race RGB automatically disconnects after a few minutes.

Behind the scenes

Race RGB receives real-time race control messages - the same data F1 uses to display flags on the official timing screens. This isn't a hack or workaround; it's the actual race control data.

When the FIA raises a flag at the track, it appears in the API within seconds. Race RGB processes this data, accounts for your calibrated delay, and sends the appropriate command to your lights through their official APIs (LIFX Cloud API, Philips Hue API, or Govee API).

All of this happens automatically. You don't need to understand APIs, delays, or race control - you just need to connect your lights and enjoy the race.
